Insights into the DGSPP Congress: Focus on mental health in sports & sport psychiatry

The Congress of the German Society for Sport Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (DGSPP) offered participants a rich program that illuminated the broad spectrum of sports psychiatry, mental health and psychotherapy. The event, which took place in September 2023, provided insights into various facets of this fascinating discipline. Here is an excerpt from the first of the two days.


The congress began with a warm welcome, setting the stage for an exciting day.



Valentin Z. Markser kicked off the presentations with a captivating insight into sports psychiatry. In his 45-minute presentation, he explored the development, tasks, and perspectives of this emerging discipline.


Andreas Höfer took participants on a historical journey into the "soul of sports." His presentation delved into the historical dimension of sports.


After a refreshing 30-minute break, the program continued with Thomas Schramm, who deepened the understanding of the connection between the heart, psyche, and sports in sports medicine, offering valuable insights into this highly relevant topic.



The focus then shifted to the practical application of sports psychology and the care of mental health in elite sports. Mr. Simon Kohls' presentation addressed sports psychological support and mental health in practice, using the example of an Austrian ice hockey academy.


After another short break, Felix Kühnle brought sociological diagnoses of depression in elite sports into focus. He analyzed the challenges that athletes face in their careers and provided valuable insights.


The DGSPP Congress provided participants with a unique opportunity to gain deeper insights into sports psychiatry and psychotherapy, fostering the exchange of valuable information and experiences in the field of mental health in sports. It was an inspiring event that underscored the significance of this discipline and stimulated discussions about future developments in this field.
